Sixth formers win the Youth Consumer Council competition. During the last summer school term, students from Sixth Form 2 and 3 took part in a competition organised by the Youth Consumer Council. Students wrote four articles on shopper’s rights and also an article on the Sixth Form shopping and budgeting programme. The students used the ‘writing with symbols’ programme to type this article, something that really impressed the organisers. Our Sixth Formers won the discretionary award, which was presented to them in a ceremony attended by schools from all around In the future we are planning to create more links with the Youth Consumer Council and we are already in the process of assessing different competition structures so we can make them more applicable for students with learning difficulties. Occupational studies – Horticulture During the school year 06-07, Sixth Form 2 took part in the Occupational Studies Programme. The specific unit taught in Sixth Form 2 was horticulture and gardening by learning how to grow and look after a variety of plants. They also had the opportunity to experience the industry of horticulture by visiting garden centres and asking questions about the production and sale of plants. The Sixth Formers used a variety of methods to grow plants such as taking cuttings using rooting powder and also planting seeds and bulbs. We also made displays by transplanting different flowers into bigger pots. The students really enjoyed the experience and after the evidence of their hard work was collected into files they were assessed by CCEA. They all achieved great marks and in combination with the Occupational Studies Programme in Share Activity Holiday A group of 17 young people from the Secondary Department went on our annual trip to Share Activity Village in Lisnaskea near Enniskillen for 1 week, Monday to Friday, 21 st to 25 th May 2007. There were 9 girls and 8 boys and 6 staff altogether. The accommodation at Share was great, with the boys in 1 large chalet and the girls in the chalet next door. The food is provided by Share centre staff and is always terrific. We all take our turn to clear up dishes and set the tables for the next meal. We had access to quite a range of activities. These included canoeing, archery, go-karting, climbing wall, swimming, a trip on the Inishcruiser with a barbecue on Crum estate & everyone’s favourite, banana boating. This year we had an extra special treat, speed boat rides on the last day; this was really exciting!! The Share Centre also provided a bus to take us to Marble Arch caves on the Tuesday. We spent the day there and everyone enjoyed the experience especially the boat ride deep in the cave. There were other school groups staying in Share at the same time, a group from Donard School and also groups from Crumlin primary & Ceara schools & we had fun with them at the disco. Secondary Department - Swimming Gala 2007 On Thursday 21st June 2007 we held our Secondary Department Swimming Gala in the Robinson Centre Learner Pool. The Gala began at 10.00 a.m. and the first races involved pupils using floats to swim on their front and on their back. Then pupils swam lengths, some were able to swim one length while others were able to swim two lengths!! The pupils finished off the morning with a relay race, really exciting. Our Vice Principal, Pat Hope came along to give out the certificates to each swimmer. Once again we had a great turn-out of family & friends who came to cheer the swimmers on. Each swimmer received a well-deserved certificate, they should all be very proud of their performance on the day. After the Gala family, friends, pupils & staff again went up to the Robinson Centre Café where the staff there provided refreshments & scones. We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff in the Robinson Centre & especially Robert & Davy who work so hard each week encouraging the young people to improve their swimming skills & work for appropriate certificates. Multisensory Swing into Action This year we have been extremely lucky in the multisensory department to receive a new swing and spring chair for pupils to enjoy during structured play and body awareness activities. The Community Safety Team at Castlereagh kindly accepted a request from staff at Tor bank School to help raise funds for a specialised swing. Constable Rab Gardiner wrote to schools in his DUC for their support asking if they would host a non-uniform day in school to raise funds. A very special thank you to Rab and the pupils and staff at Cairnsville, Leadhill, Knockbreda, Millenium Inetgrated Primary Schools, Newtownbreda High School, Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, Knock and Lagan College for raising nearly £5000 for the purchase of the new equipment – well done and thank you!
