Sixth Form 2's Team Building Training at Belfast Activity Centre
Sixth Form 1 Combine Health and Study
Belfast Activity Centre
Every Friday morning some students from Sixth Form go to the Belfast Activity Centre at Shaw’s Bridge as part of our fitness programme. When we are there, Nicola, our instructor teaches us lots of new skills.
This year we have been climbing at Crawfordsburn Scout Centre, completed a low ropes course at Ardnavalley Scout Centre and took part in crate stacking in Barnett’s Demense. We had to wear helmets and harnesses to keep safe. When it is cold we stayed inside the centre and did arts and crafts, music and first aid sessions. We were able to bandage each other and we learnt how to put an injured person in the recovery position. When the weather got better we went canoeing on the River Lagan and went cycling in Barnett’s Park. It was really great fun. I really enjoyed going BAC with my friends and we learnt to work as a team. It was also a brilliant way to keep fit.
Written by student from Sixth Form 3 Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award Scheme I started my Silver Award in September 2006. I have to complete four sections, physical, skill, service and expedition. For my physical I did dance. I learnt new dance routines and put on a show. The service section was hard. I had to take the S.I.S. sheet around the school and collect information. For my skill section I did drama. I really like drama. Terence has written about our expedition.
Ashleigh A few weeks ago we did our Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. The first day walked around Glenariff Forest. We had to follow red and white tape. We had to carry our rucksacks and wear boots. After the walk we went to the campsite. We put up our tents and cooked out tea on the trangia. We had pasta Bolognese. The next morning we walked passed an old castle and some cows. We stopped at the Giants Causeway and had lunch. When we got back to the campsite we played football and blind names bluff. We cooked our tea and went to bed early. It rained all night and in the morning we had to take down our tents. We had breakfast and put on our waterproof trousers and coat. We walked from Portstewart to Portrush all by ourselves. I really enjoyed my camping trip. I liked sharing a tent with Darren and talking through the night when I should have been asleep.
Terence Thoughts of a former pupil! Jenna joined the Sixth Form in 2004 and completed her studies in June 2007. Before she left, she recorded her memories of her time in Tor Bank. I used to go to Longstone School in Dundonald and I really liked the staff and pupils there. In December 2004 I had to leave Longstone as I was too old to stay at that school. I moved to Tor Bank School Sixth Form Department and soon met up with some old friends and made lots of new friends. Being in Sixth Form was very different to being at school. I got to try lots of different things and go to lots of different places. Every Monday I went to Castlereagh College to do an I.C.T. Equalskills Course. I enjoyed college and was encouraged to buy my own lunch and manage my own money. It was hard at first, but I got used to budgeting my money. On Tuesdays I went on Careers visits and saw lots of different work places. Then my teacher Zara referred me to Mencap and they got me a placement in New Look every Friday. My teacher then got me a place in Datalink. I learned to photocopy, fax, file, use the telephone and word process. My teacher Zara then got me a placement in St Elizabeth’s Mums and Tots. I helped set up the hall, played with children, washed dishes and tidied up afterwards. At first I went with my classroom assistant Llewellyn, but soon I was travel trained by the occupational therapist and Llewellyn and I went there by myself. I used this work placement as the service section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award. This year I hope to finish my Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award and have new work experience placements in The Oasis Café in the Ulster Hospital and The British Red Cross shop in Bangor. I have also learned to get around Dundonald Village on my own and can walk to Asda on my own to buy ingredients for the weekly cookery lesson. I can also go to the library on my own and order some cds.
