Therapy and Nursing Services
Medical Staff and Therapists are an integral part of the educational process. Collaborative planning involves input from therapist, nursing staff, teaching, classroom assistants and parents to ensure all aspects of the individual pupils development are met effectively.
South & East Belfast Trust provides therapy and Nursing Services.
We have at present the following therapy provision:
1 full time Speech Therapist
2 part time Speech Therapists
1 full time Speech Therapy Assistants
2 part time Physiotherapists
1 Physiotherapy Assistant
2 Occupational Therapists
We have a nurse or nursing assistant provided by the South and East Trust on the premises every day to support the pupil’s medical needs. They are supported by an external team.
The Schools Medical Officer, reviews medical conditions at regular intervals and all parents are invited to attend. Other medicals may also be available at clinics held by other consultants within the learning disability field.
If permissible some forms of medication will be administered within the school day. This is in strict accordance with our Administration of Medication Policy and all details must be provided and signed by a general practitioner.
CARE PLANS
Pupils with complex medical needs may require detailed ‘care plans’ to be drawn up in collaboration with school staff, the school nurse, parents and the G.P. Such plans clearly outline guidance procedures that should be followed to ensure that the complex medical needs of pupils are met effectively.
Dental examinations are carried out routinely by the School’s Dentist. Pupils are encouraged to brush their teeth after eating. Dental hygiene programmes are an integral part of the ‘healthy eating’ activities offered.
AROMATHERAPHY / REFLEXOLOGY
Mrs C. Cinnomond a trained aromatherapist and reflexologist provides therapy for children with sensory needs. This helps pupils to relax comfortably in a more empathetic and supportive environment.
