Rights Respecting School Gold Award
Tor Bank School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School. We are currently working to sustain our Gold Award, which is the highest award in the UNICEF programme. Our school has fully embedded children’s rights throughout our policies, practice and ethos.
All pupils can become members of our Rights Respecting Steering Group, which meets twice monthly to learn about The Rights of the Child. It gives pupils a chance to voice their opinions so adults can better understand the school experience from their perspective and allows our young people opportunities to make changes. The members of our Rights Respecting Group also created a mascot for our school: Tor Bank Terry, The Rights Respecting Rhino. Terry features on Rights Respecting certificates presented at assembly, and on posters promoting Articles across the school.
Tor Bank School is also a proud member of the Rights Respecting Schools SEN Network, connecting with other Rights Respecting Schools across Northern Ireland every half-term to share ideas and best practices. In March 2026 our Pupil Steering Group gave a presentation about the work they have done across the school in front of five other special schools and Chris Quinn, the Commissioner of Children and Young People.
We will continue to work hard on our Rights Respecting School journey by developing a new action plan which will help us maintain our Gold Award status.
